Iranian Cartoonist Alireza Pakdel Wins World Press Cartoon 2017 with Migrant Satire

award · 2026-05-05

Alireza Pakdel, an Iranian cartoonist born in Mashhad in 1981, won the 12th World Press Cartoon award in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, with his piece "Immigrants." The cartoon depicts a shipwreck in the Mediterranean as a spectacle inside an aquarium, where spectators watch drowning migrants like an aquatic show. Pakdel received the Grand Prix and first prize in the Editorial category, along with €10,000. The award highlights Iran's contrasting approach to refugees: in March 2017, the UNHCR praised Tehran's "exemplary" efforts, noting 950,000 registered Afghans and 28,000 Iraqis in Iran, plus an estimated 2 million unregistered. A 2015 decree by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei opened schools to Afghan children, creating 15,000 new classes for 350,000 minors. Other winners included Michael Kountouris (Greece) for "Nice Attack," Sunnerberg Constantin (France) for "Welcome," and Mariagrazia Quaranta (Italy) for "Trump Punk." The exhibition runs until August 10 at the Cultural Center Congress in Caldas da Rainha, featuring 267 works from 51 nationalities.
