Invisible Cities: Architecture and Video Collide at Venice's Spazio Ridotto

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Curated by Stephanie Cristello, 'Invisible Cities' at Spazio Ridotto in Venice explores the intersection of architecture and moving images through six video works. The exhibition, a collaboration between Zuecca Project Space and Expo Chicago, runs until December 10, 2016. Cristello, director of Expo Video at Expo Chicago, selected films that engage with architectural themes, drawing inspiration from Italo Calvino's 'Invisible Cities.' Works include David Hartt's 'The Republic' (2014), which uses Constantinos Doxiadis' urban plans for Athens and Detroit; Jonas Dahlberg's 'One Way Street' (2002), a black-and-white video of a model street; Jesper Just's 'Llano' (2012), set in a ruined California commune; Bettina Pousttchi's 'Double Empire' (2000), a reinterpretation of Warhol's building shots; Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle's 'Alltagzeit' (2001), filmed at Mies van der Rohe's Neue Nationalgalerie; and Virginia Colwell's 'A Diptych, A Chronicle' (2016), the only video with dialogue, translated into Italian. The exhibition emphasizes how architecture influences contemporary art, both as setting and subject, and aims to expand the small space conceptually and experientially.
