Inuuteq Storch to Represent Denmark at 60th Venice Biennale with Greenland-Inspired Exhibition

Inuuteq Storch will represent Denmark at the 60th Venice Biennale, running from 20 April to 24 November 2024. His exhibition in the Giardini pavilion blends traditional and contemporary elements, mirroring Greenland's cultural evolution. Storch describes his artistic approach as flexible, shaped by his nation's history and future prospects. He acknowledges the Venice Biennale's significance, noting it once seemed unreachable until the Danish Arts Foundation selected his work. Storch views art as a universal language but recognizes unique regional expressions. Greenlandic art, he explains, originated from survival practices like decorating harpoons, making qajaqs, storytelling, and creating tupilaks and tattoos, later influenced by Western concepts. For deeper understanding of Greenland, he recommends reading Taimane Gûtimik Nalussûgama, listening to rapper Josef Tarrak, and watching the documentary 'Sume, Sound of Revolution' (2014). Influences include Kârale Andreassen (1890–1934), whom he considers Greenland's most important artist, along with musicians Ole Kristiansen, Sume, and Andachan. Storch looks forward to family time in Venice, as they haven't been together since his parents' divorce.
