International Press Slams Futurism Exhibition in Rome for Political Bias

exhibition · 2026-04-26

The exhibition 'Il tempo del Futurismo' at Rome's GNAMC, which commenced on December 2, 2024, has drawn criticism from both The New York Times and El País for neglecting the political backdrop of Futurism, especially its connections to fascism. With €2 million in public funding, the exhibition replaced its initial committee of experts with less qualified individuals appointed by the Ministry of Culture. Scholars Massimo Duranti and Günter Berghaus, who were not included, have accused the government of fostering a glorified perspective on Futurism. The sole mention of Mussolini appears in a sculpture by Renato Bertelli. Curator Gabriele Simongini justified this approach to prevent political bias, highlighting concerns regarding Giorgia Meloni's administration's influence on cultural institutions.
