International Competition Launched for Milan's New Conservatory Campus

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

An international design competition, 'Il Bosco della Musica', has been launched for the new campus of the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan, with a total investment of €47 million. The project aims to regenerate the Rogoredo district, an area with strong social needs, by creating a green, sustainable music campus. The site includes the Palazzina ex-Chimici, the last remnant of the Redaelli steelworks. The competition is open to architects and engineers, with a deadline of October 10, 2022, and a winner to be announced on November 3, 2022. The first prize is €524,378.87, with four runners-up receiving €56,183.45 each. The campus will feature an outdoor arena, a 400-seat auditorium, classrooms, recording studios, digital labs, a mixed-use residence for 220 people, coworking space, and a refreshment area. The initiative began in 2019, with a preliminary study in 2020 and a protocol signed in April 2022 by the Ministry of University and Research, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility, the Lombardy Region, the Municipality of Milan, and the Conservatory. The competition is managed by the Interregional Public Works Office for Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna. The project is seen as a catalyst for urban regeneration, creating a cultural hub outside the city center. It follows recent competitions for the Teatro alla Scala's new workshops and the BEIC library.
