International Commission to Select documenta 15 Director Announced

The city of Kassel has announced the formation of an international commission to select the artistic director for documenta 15, scheduled to run from June 18 to September 25, 2022. The commission includes Ute Meta Bauer, founder and director of the Centre for Contemporary Art in Singapore; Charles Esche, director of the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven; Amar Kanwar, artist and filmmaker from New Delhi; Frances Morris, director of Tate Modern in London; Gabi Ngcobo, curator of the 2018 Berlin Biennale; Elvira Dyangani Ose, curator at Creative Time in New York; Philippe Pirotte, director of the Städelschule in Frankfurt; and Jochen Volz, director of the Pinacoteca de São Paulo in Brazil. The commission will evaluate proposals and select the best candidate. The previous edition, documenta 14, was controversial for its dual-venue format between Athens and Kassel, budget overruns of €7 million, and ongoing protests. It closed on September 17, 2017, under Polish curator Adam Szymczyk. documenta was founded by Arnold Bode in 1955 as a side event to the Bundesgartenschau in Kassel.
