Interactive map catalogs Fascist monuments across Italy
The Ferruccio Parri Institute has released an online map cataloging Fascist-era monuments, buildings, and street names across Italy. The project, titled "Luoghi del fascismo" (Places of Fascism), aims to document and analyze the historical memory of Fascism from 1919 to 1945. It includes sites such as the fresco by Primo Conti in Milan's Palace of Justice depicting Mussolini, the white marble obelisk at Rome's Foro Italico inscribed with "DVX," and the Ridolfi stadium in Florence. The mapping began in 2018 and was largely completed by the centenary of the March on Rome on October 28, 2022. The research was conducted with limited funds and volunteer help from the network of institutes for the history of the Resistance. The project is continuously updated and accepts public contributions, subject to review by a scientific committee. It also inspired a scholarly volume edited by historians Giulia Albanese and Lucia Ceci, titled "I luoghi del fascismo. Memoria, politica e rimozione," published by Viella. The need for such a catalog grew after a 2016 controversy over a proposed "Museum of Fascism" in Predappio, Mussolini's burial place.
