Interactive Immersion into Leonardo's Last Supper at Ars Electronica
Franz Fischnaller's 'Last Supper Interactive' (LSI) launched September 8 at the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria. The immersive installation, created for the Deep Space of Ars Electronica Center, uses 1,042 panoramic shots from a 2010 digitization campaign to render a 21-billion-pixel digital replica of Leonardo da Vinci's fresco. Developed with tech company Haltadefinizione, LSI features the 'Virtual Tool of Alberti's Enunciation,' an interactive learning device based on Leon Battista Alberti's perspective rules. This tool lets visitors view the painting from multiple heights and perspectives, even from within the pictorial space, revealing details of the apostles and table. The high-definition image will remain on display for one year at Deep Space, a 16x9 meter 8K-3D stereo immersive projection space.
