Inschibboleth launches 'La stanza dipinta' series with books on Caravaggio, Artemisia, and Bill Viola

publication · 2026-04-26

Roman publisher Inschibboleth has launched a new book series titled 'La stanza dipinta. Filosofia e pittura' at the Teatro Manzoni in Rome. Edited by Giuseppe Di Giacomo and Salvatore Tedesco, the series focuses on the corporeality and materiality of painting, as well as its opposite, immateriality. The inaugural titles are 'Caravaggio. L’eternità dell’istante' by Giuseppe Di Giacomo, 'Artemisia Gentileschi. Et lei vederà in effetti questo talento' by Salvatore Tedesco, and 'Bill Viola. Trascendenze digitali' by Alessandro Alfieri. Di Giacomo's volume examines Caravaggio's use of suspended action, exemplified in 'The Incredulity of Saint Thomas' in Potsdam. Tedesco's book deconstructs false primacies surrounding Artemisia Gentileschi, reconfiguring her authorship on pictorial and personal fronts. Alfieri's work explores Bill Viola's digital transcendences, referencing Benjamin, Deleuze, and Lyotard, and connects Viola's technological Renaissance to painting as a living language and memory archive. The series aims to provoke a 'always renewed questioning' when approaching artworks, moving beyond tired art historical narratives. The project draws an analogy to Andrea Mantegna's Camera Picta (1465–1474) in the Palazzo Ducale of Mantua, a Renaissance masterpiece that integrates interior and exterior, man, nature, myth, and history.
