INS Studio Transforms Professor's Residence into Community Literacy Hub in Makassar

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

INS Studio has converted a former university professor's residence in Makassar, Indonesia, into Taobun Literacy House, a community-oriented space combining a café, library, and workspace. Located in an educational district surrounded by universities, schools, and kindergartens, the project centers on a compact library that anchors the layout. The design includes tactile guiding blocks, braille signage, and ramps for accessibility. Outdoor seating uses reclaimed timber from dismantled traditional houses. The project was led by principal architect Wisnu Wardhana, with designers Rima Pratiwi and Awin Anugraarif, and built by AR Construction. Photography by Akasa Rana.
