Inner Spaces: Milan's electronic music festival curated by a Jesuit priest
The Inner Spaces festival at Auditorium San Fedele in Milan, directed by Jesuit priest and musician Father Antonio Pileggi (born 1966), runs until May 15, 2023. The series features five concerts blending electronic, instrumental, and acoustic music. Past performances include Loscil (ambient pioneer from Kranky Records), cellist Lukas Lauermann, compositions by Arvo Pärt, experimental ambient by Abul Mogard, a Via Crucis with Bach and Liszt played by an early music ensemble and electric guitarist Francesco Zago. Upcoming: April 17 with Alessandro La Ciacera on virtual organ performing Olivier Messiaen, followed by Kali Malone's electroacoustic octophonic live set; May 15 closes with Thomas Ankersmit (infrasound and otoacoustic emissions research) and Felicia Atkinson (electronic keyboards, piano, voice, poetry). The festival uses the Acusmonium Sator sound system with 54 speakers for immersive spatialization. Founded in 2012, Inner Spaces fills a gap in Milan for experimental electronic music integrated with historical works. Pileggi, who studied piano in Reggio Calabria, Lyon, and Paris, has composed from 1986 to 1998 and organized festivals in France and Latin America since 1990. The 2023 edition's subtitle is "Echi di speranza" (Echoes of Hope), inspired by Andrei Tarkovsky's lyrical hope despite exile.
