Inmates as jurors: Altri Sguardi film festival at Rebibbia prison

Altri Sguardi, a film festival presented during Venice 74, is taking place at Rebibbia prison in Rome until October 19, 2017. The event is organized by four women: Ilaria Spada, president and co-founder of the association Mètide; Roberta Mangini; Laura Delli Colli, president of the Italian Film Journalists and artistic coordinator; and Clementina Montezemolo, psychotherapist and scientific consultant. Each screening is attended by 100 inmates, 20 of whom serve as fixed jurors while the other 80 rotate. Screenings run from September 21 to October 12, with an awards ceremony on October 19 featuring a special screening of Paolo Virzì's 'La pazza gioia' (starring Micaela Ramazzotti and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi), requested by the prison administration. Films in the program include 'La ragazza del mondo' by Marco Danieli, 'L'ora legale' by Ficarra and Picone, 'Non è un paese per giovani' by Giovanni Veronesi, 'Lasciati andare' by Francesco Amato, and 'Tutto quello che vuoi' by Francesco Bruni. Debates cover themes such as identity, legality, friendship, dreams, errors, rebirth, and the importance of not forgetting feelings. The festival is part of a broader trend of art initiatives in prisons, with similar projects in Rome, Taranto, Rimini, and London.
