Inhotim: Brazil's Unique Art and Botanical Garden Model
Inhotim Institute in Minas Gerais, Brazil, has become a unique global destination combining contemporary art with a rich botanical garden. Founded by Bernardo Paz, a mining entrepreneur and major Latin American collector, it opened to the public in October 2006 after a decade of development. Located near Brumadinho, 60 km from Belo Horizonte, it forms a historical triangle with Ouro Preto and Belo Horizonte. The institute features a collection of 500 works by about 100 artists, including monumental pieces by Dan Graham, Hélio Oiticica, Cildo Meireles, and Matthew Barney. Its philosophy integrates art, environment, and social action, with educational programs, research centers, and local development projects. The curatorial team includes Allan Schwartzman (USA), Rodrigo Moura (Brazil), and Jochen Volz (Germany). Nine new site-specific works were inaugurated in 2009, including Beam Drop by Chris Burden, Sonic Pavilion by Doug Aitken, and De Lama Lâmina by Matthew Barney. The botanical garden, designed by Roberto Burle Marx, spans 45 hectares with five ornamental lakes and protects 600 hectares of Atlantic Forest. Inhotim exemplifies Brazil's new spirit of combining modernity with sustainable development and social integration.
