Ingrid Wiener's Woven Shopping List and the Afterlife of Textile Art

Austrian artist Ingrid Wiener, whose exhibition at Barbara Wien gallery in Berlin closes August 1st, 2026, has spent decades weaving tapestries from disposable materials like handwritten notes, cucumber still lifes, and X-rays of her own brain. Her 2012 tapestry reproduces a shopping list she gave to partner Oswald Wiener before a flight to Whitehorse, Canada—a document that took minutes to write but years to weave. Wiener began weaving in the 1970s when textile was dismissed as craft, not fine art. Inspired by the Wiener Gruppe, she studied in Vienna, befriended VALIE EXPORT, collaborated with Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Dieter Roth, and ran cafés in Vienna and Dawson City. Roth suggested she use boredom as a method, creating "demarcation lines" where repetition drifts into abstraction. Contemporary artists like Alexandria Masse (25, Canada) crocheted her birth-control information sheet into a twelve-metre tapestry over 18 months, while French designer Entre Crochet sells Etsy patterns for crocheting shopping receipts.
