Ingres Exhibition in Milan Reexamines Neoclassical Paradox

exhibition · 2026-05-04

A major exhibition at Palazzo Reale in Milan presents over 150 works, including more than 60 paintings, by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, on view until June 23. Curated in collaboration with the Musée Ingres in Montauban, the show aims to offer a more complete perspective on the artist, who is described as both an heir to Raphael and a precursor to Picasso. Museum director Florence Viguier-Dutheil states that after Ingres, painting is never the same, as he changed portraiture, nude painting, and historical painting. The exhibition also highlights Milan's 19th-century urban transformation, including the new Pinacoteca di Brera.
