Inge Morath Retrospective at Casa Carraresi in Treviso

A major retrospective of Inge Morath's photography is on view at Casa Carraresi in Treviso, featuring over 150 prints that span her career from the early 1950s onward. The exhibition is structured across three levels plus a projection room, with sections dedicated to her key reportages in Venice, London, Spain, Iran, the United States, France, China, Romania, Russia, Austria, and Ireland, as well as her 1966 'Masks' project and portraits of Saul Steinberg. Morath began her photographic training in London in 1952 under Simon Guttmann, a photographer for Berliner Illustrierte and founder of the Dephot agency. She joined Magnum Photos as an associate member in 1953 and became a full member in 1955, the first woman to do so. Her background as an editor and translator informed her intellectual approach, enabling her to capture the surreal and ironic aspects of everyday life while maintaining deep empathy with her subjects. The exhibition offers insight into her professional and personal character, highlighting her firm, concrete nature and ability to perceive the connection between people and their environments.
