Inés Jimm's 'The Observer – I’ll Be Your Mirror' opens Tönnheim Gallery's new Madrid space

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Spanish emerging artist Inés Jimm has inaugurated Tönnheim Gallery's new location on Doctor Fourquet street in central Madrid with her exhibition 'The Observer – I’ll Be Your Mirror,' running until May 24, 2026. Jimm's practice explores sleep as a state of radical truth and emotional pause, a form of silent resistance against productivity mandates. Her work has evolved from personal healing through observing others in sleep to broader reflections on identity, exhaustion, and the desire to belong. The exhibition features a darkened palette, placing her 'Oniros'—Greek mythological personifications of dreams—into darkness. Jimm moves away from the bed as a physical stage, reimagining it as a magical, liminal concept that is less pleasurable and more uncomfortable. She draws inspiration from modern painting movements that opposed realism, specifically referencing Ramón Casas's late 19th and early 20th century works like 'La pereza' and 'Joven decadente,' which depicted relaxed, hidden attitudes. Jimm also cites Joaquín Sorolla's capture of skin and luminosity, and Lucian Freud's carnality and unorthodox perspectives, though she aims for a 'more positive version.' The exhibition shifts her reflection from the personal to the general, offering a public refuge for acceptance and healing.
