Indigenous Debates and Exhibitions in São Paulo Highlight Claudia Andujar and Ailton Krenak

exhibition · 2026-04-23

A series of events and exhibitions in São Paulo focus on Indigenous causes, anchored by Claudia Andujar's retrospective at the Instituto Moreira Salles. On March 14, the IMS hosts an open conversation with Ailton Krenak, a prominent Indigenous leader from the Krenak group in Minas Gerais. Krenak, who participated in Brazil's 1988 Constituent Assembly and founded the NGO Núcleo de Cultura Indígena, also joins a seminar on March 15 titled 'Questão indígena, os museus e a escola' at the IMS. This seminar, organized by the Memorial da Resistência de São Paulo in partnership with IMS and the Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia da USP, continues on March 16 at the Memorial's headquarters with historians, museologists, curators, and Indigenous leaders. The seminar dialogues with the exhibition 'Ser essa Terra: São Paulo Cidade Indígena,' on view at the Memorial da Resistência until April 22. Curated by Daniel Kairoz and Marília Bonas with consultancy from Casé Angatu Xukuru Tupinambá, the show features testimonies, images, and objects about the existence and resistance of Indigenous peoples in São Paulo. Separately, on March 16, the Casa do Povo hosts Claudia Andujar for a 'Círculo de Reflexão sobre Judaísmo Contemporâneo,' where the artist of Jewish origin has drawn parallels between the extermination of Indigenous peoples in Brazil and the Holocaust in Europe.
