Indigenous Australian Artists Reclaim History in Paris and London Exhibitions

In Paris and London, two significant exhibitions delve into the ties of Indigenous Australians to their land through modern artistic expressions. At Palais de Tokyo, Jonathan Jones showcases 'untitled (transcriptions of country)' until 20 February 2022, inspired by Nicolas Baudin's expedition from 1800 to 1803. Collaborating with migrant and refugee groups from Sydney, Jones has produced more than 300 embroidered representations of plant species gathered by Baudin, now housed at the National Herbarium in Paris. The exhibit also features culturally important wreaths and a film. Meanwhile, Tate Modern's 'A Year in Art: Australia 1992' is on view until Autumn 2022, highlighting over 30 pieces from eight Indigenous artists, including Eddie Koiki Mabo, Emily Kame Kngwarreye, and Gordon Bennett, which confront colonial narratives and uphold Indigenous wisdom.
