Indianapolis Symphony CEO James Johnson to Step Down in June

On June 20, 2026, James Johnson will resign from his position as CEO of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, concluding an eight-year tenure. This announcement was released on May 5, but did not clarify the reasons for his exit or his upcoming plans. Johnson took on the role in 2018 after leading the Omaha Symphony Association. Under his guidance, the orchestra faced the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which included furloughing musicians and staff layoffs before recovery. Significant appointments during his leadership featured concertmaster Kevin Lin and music director Jun Märkl, who joined in 2024 after being the artistic advisor since 2021.
