India Returns to Venice Biennale in 2026 After Six-Year Absence
On October 10, during a national conference on tribal arts in New Delhi, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, the union minister for culture and tourism, revealed that India will return to the Venice Biennale in 2026 after a six-year hiatus. The national pavilion will showcase works from emerging Indigenous artists, specifically selections from "Silent Conversation: From Margins to the Centre," an exhibition co-organized by the Sankala Foundation, a nonprofit based in New Delhi. Shekhawat highlighted the role of tribal communities as guardians of India's cultural heritage and natural resources. Historically, India has participated in the Biennale only twice, in 2011 and 2019, due to inconsistent government backing. Nevertheless, Indian artists have gained international recognition, with 12 featured in Adrian Pedrosa's 2024 exhibition, marking a record for the main pavilion. The upcoming participation will see enhanced collaboration between public and private cultural sectors, as the latter currently plays a key role in promoting Indian art.
