India Pavilion at Venice Biennale Aestheticises Displacement
The 61st Venice Biennale showcases the India Pavilion, named 'Geographies of Distance: remembering home.' It features six new artworks that delve into concepts of home, memory, and belonging, utilizing traditional materials like bamboo, thread, and earth. Curated by Amin Jaffer, the exhibition is a partnership involving the Ministry of Culture of India, the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai, and the Serendipity Arts Foundation in New Delhi. Artists include Alwar Balasubramaniam and Ranjani Shettar, among others. While critics appreciate the themes of fragility and resilience, they warn that the presentation may romanticize material vulnerability, overlooking crucial social and political issues like displacement in modern India. This marks India’s return to the Biennale after seven years, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a 'New India.'
