Independent, Scope and NADA Art Fairs Open in New York
The eighth edition of Independent opened today at Spring Studios in Tribeca, returning for its second year at this venue. Co-founded by Elizabeth Dee and Darren Flook in 2010, the invitation-only fair features 52 galleries from 20 cities, with 15 participating for the first time. This year's edition is organized around five themes: solo shows dedicated to women artists, a focus on artists born in the 1980s, key works from the 1970s, intergenerational groups, and site-specific installations. Meanwhile, the 17th edition of Scope Art Fair is underway at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea, featuring 60 booths. Scope, which was the first fair to challenge the Armory Show in New York, also has editions in Miami and Basel. Italian galleries at Scope include Antonio Colombo and Naif from Milan, Barbara Paci from Pietrasanta, and White Noise from Rome. The only Italian participant at NADA is Neochrome from Turin. NADA, now in its sixth New York edition, is held at Skylight Clarkson North on Washington Street, directed by Heather Hubbs. It is a non-profit fair founded by galleries for galleries, known for its serious yet experimental atmosphere and a rich program of collateral events. All three fairs run from March 2 to 5, 2017.
