Independent cinema in Italy: market growth and structural challenges

other · 2026-04-26

Independent films now represent over a fifth of the global box office, with 2023 revenues reaching $7.3 billion out of $33.4 billion total, according to Indy Film Library. Examples include Blumhouse's "Insidious: The Red Door" ($189 million) and Spyglass Media Group's "Scream VI" ($168 million). The seventh edition of the Nòt Film Fest took place in Santarcangelo di Romagna, Italy, gathering international actors, directors, and producers. Artistic directors Alizé Latini and Giovanni Labadessa discussed the Italian independent cinema landscape. Labadessa noted that Italy once had a strong indie tradition with companies like FANDANGO, LUCKY RED, and INDIGO, but today the sector suffers from dependence on public funds, low theater attendance, and platform saturation. He contrasted this with the US, where private investment drives market-oriented production. Latini called for a structural revision of the distribution system to accommodate the abundance of films. A survey by WGI and 100Autori found that 75% of directors and screenwriters under 35 live below the poverty line (€15,000 gross/year), with half of screenwriters earning under €5,000 and half of directors under €7,000 annually. In response, the Collettivo under 35 was formed by 100Autori, Writers Guild Italia, and Anac to advocate for young professionals and promote independent cinema.
