Independent Brussels Moves to October, Breaking from Art Brussels

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

Independent Brussels, the Belgian edition of the New York-born art fair, will shift from its traditional April slot to November starting with its third edition in 2018. The move marks a deliberate separation from Art Brussels, with which it had previously coincided. Founder Elizabeth Dee appointed Vincent Honoré as sole curator in late 2017, signaling a new direction. The fair aims to offer a dynamic program of talks and performances, emphasizing collaboration between galleries and institutions worldwide. Independent Art Fair originated in 2010 in Chelsea, New York, as a curated alternative to the Armory Show. It expanded to Brussels in 2016 at the Vanderborght building. The decision to reschedule was influenced by a crowded April calendar that includes Art Cologne, miart, Berlin Gallery Weekend, and Artmontecarlo.
