Independent Bookstores Face Fragility Amid Publishing Shifts
On April 23, World Book and Copyright Day, and April 25, the Fête de la librairie indépendante, independent bookstores in France are celebrated. The event, initiated nearly 30 years ago by Marie-Rose Guarnieri, owner of Librairie des Abbesses in Paris, originates from the Catalan Sant Jordi festival. Under Franco's regime, April 23 was the only day opponents could demonstrate for democracy and publishing freedom. Today, over 700 of France's 3,000 independent bookstores participate, along with stores in Belgium and French-speaking Switzerland, giving each reader a book and a rose. More than 80 countries join the day. Guarnieri and Audrey Neveu, manager of Les 2 GeorgeS in Bondy and Bobigny, discuss the fragile economics of the trade, emphasizing booksellers' roles as counselors, mediators, and discoverers of readers, especially for youth. The publishing sector has seen upheaval with Vincent Bolloré's acquisition of Hachette Group, encompassing about 50 publishing houses, and the departure of over 200 authors from Grasset after the dismissal of its longtime director Olivier Nora. Guarnieri criticized the attack on the bond between author, editor, and the security of a publishing house, as well as on freedom of publication and literary diversity. The 28th edition underscores that these unsubsidized venues keep writers' words and ideas alive.
