Independent art spaces in Salento: a new generation

A new wave of artists and cultural operators is breathing life into the contemporary art landscape in Puglia's Salento region through independent venues. Notable examples include Lu Cafausu, established in 2006 in San Cesario di Lecce by a group comprising Emilio Fantin, Luigi Negro, Giancarlo Norese, Cesare Pietroiusti, and Luigi Presicce, who later founded Fondazione Lac o Le Mon in 2015. In Gagliano del Capo, Ramdom, initiated by Paolo Mele and Luca Coclite in 2011, launched Lastation in 2015, transforming the local railway station into a multifunctional hub. Emerging spaces like nagla – contemporary arts farm (Specchia), Associazione Noon, Kunstschau, Swapmuseum, 167/B Street, LO.FT, Industrial Therapy, and Lamantice, all in Lecce, are now forming networks and promoting experimentation, indicating a shift towards a more interconnected and European-focused cultural scene.
