Independent 20th Century: New Fair for Overlooked 20th-Century Artists

Independent, the New York art fair established in 2010 by Elizabeth Dee, Darren Flook, Matthew Higgs, Laura Mitterrand, and a group of galleries, will present Independent 20th Century from September 8 to 11, 2022, at Cipriani South Street during Armory Art Week. This fair highlights 20th-century artists (1900-2000) who were overlooked in their era, showcasing more than thirty galleries founded post-1970. A curatorial advisory team, including Alma Luxembourg, Joseph Nahmad, Gió Marconi, and Vito Schnabel, supports the initiative, which seeks to expand narratives in art history by focusing on Black artists and those from historically marginalized areas, reflecting influences from movements such as #MeToo and Black Lives Matter. Matthew Higgs remarked that this reevaluation is crucial for contemporary art.
