Inci Eviner to Present Architectural Installation for Turkey at 2019 Venice Biennale
Inci Eviner will represent Turkey at the 2019 Venice Biennale with an architectural installation in the Arsenale. Her work explores gaps between theory and life, examining how capitalist systems and ideologies interact with humankind through institutions. The installation blends moving image, objects, drawings, and performance on a multi-layered stage, where actors and visitors move past walls. Eviner's practice involves a long process using various media, including video and live performance, drawing from personal memory and culture. She questions the concept of national identity, viewing 'representing a country' as nostalgic, and focuses on creating works freely while considering representation of 'the other'. The political situation in Turkey influences her art, which she believes can inspire societal change. Eviner recalls being inspired by Louise Bourgeois's exhibition at the US Pavilion during a previous Venice Biennale visit. The biennale runs from 11 May to 24 November.
