In-ruins residency lands in Squillace Castle for second edition
The second edition of the itinerant artistic residency In-ruins is taking place from July 27 to August 5, 2021, in the medieval village of Squillace, Calabria, with its main hub at the Norman Castle built in 1044. Founded in 2018 by curator Maria Luigia Gioffre together with artist Nicola Guastamacchia, Dobroslawa Nowak, and Nicola Nitido, the program includes residencies, conferences, symposia, and aesthetic research projects focused on interdisciplinarity. The first edition was held at the Scolacium Archaeological Park in Roccelletta di Borgia, a site previously known for the early-2000s Intersezioni festival that brought artists like Antony Gormley, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Jan Fabre among the ruins. This year's selected artists are Itamar Gov (Israel), Anna Ill (Spain), Emii Alrai (UK), Martyna Benedyka (Poland), and the Italian duo Ceresoli Cosco. Activities will also take place at Palazzo Pepe and the Gothic Church of Santa Maria della Pietà. The residency aims to address contemporary themes of fluidity and fragmentation in the digital age against the backdrop of historically frozen ruins. An open day on August 4 will present the results of the artists' research.
