Imprisoned Turkish Arts Patron Osman Kavala Receives Václav Havel Human Rights Prize

award · 2026-04-20

Osman Kavala, a Turkish philanthropist and arts patron imprisoned since 2017, has been awarded the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize by the Council of Europe. The award ceremony occurred on 9 October in Strasbourg during the Parliamentary Assembly's autumn plenary session. Kavala's wife Ayşe Kavala accepted the honor on his behalf, reading a letter from prison where he dedicated it to fellow unjustly detained citizens and quoted Václav Havel's words about maintaining hope. Currently serving a life sentence, Kavala was arrested for alleged involvement in the 2013 Gezi Park protests. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has previously labeled him 'the red Soros of Turkey,' accusing him of conspiring with philanthropist George Soros. Kavala founded Depo gallery in Istanbul, a former tobacco warehouse transformed in 2008 that has become a sanctuary for critical cultural voices. Writing for ArtReview, Kaya Genç highlighted Depo's role in Istanbul's cultural landscape and referenced the exhibition 'The Past is Present' at the venue. The Václav Havel Human Rights Prize recognizes annual contributions to human rights defense.
