Impressionist Treasures from Ordrupgaard Collection at Fondation Gianadda

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The exhibition 'Tesori impressionisti' at Fondation Pierre Gianadda in Martigny, Switzerland, brings together around sixty masterpieces from the collection of Danish couple Wilhelm and Henny Hansen, housed at the Ordrupgaard museum in Copenhagen. The museum, opened in 1953, was expanded by Zaha Hadid in 2014. The show features works by Barbizon school, Impressionist, and Post-Impressionist masters. Eight paintings by Corot, from after his second trip to Italy in 1834, mark his full maturity. Courbet's 'Caccia al capriolo' reflects social protest; after the Paris Commune of 1871, Courbet was imprisoned and fled to Switzerland, dying in 1877. Six canvases by Pissarro illustrate key periods of his research, including 'Angolo di giardino a Eragny'. Sisley's luminous landscapes depict Louveciennes, Marly-le-Roi, and Moret-sur-Loing. Monet's 'La radura di Chailly' references Manet's 'Déjeuner sur l'herbe' from the 1863 Salon des Refusés. Manet's 'Cesto di pere' was painted in his last summer. Renoir portraits capture Parisian bourgeoisie. Female painters Berthe Morisot and Eva Gonzales are included. Eight works by Gauguin, bought from his Danish wife, date from 1888, a crucial year when he moved from Pont-Aven to Arles to work with van Gogh. The exhibition runs at Fondation Gianadda, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2018.
