Imperial-era boundary stone unearthed in Rome; ancient Roman foundations found in Milan
A cippus pomerialis (boundary stone) from 49 AD, commissioned by Emperor Claudius, was discovered during Piazza Augusto Imperatore renovation works in Rome. The 2-meter travertine block marks the pomerium, the sacred boundary of Rome. It is the tenth Claudian cippus found, the last in 1909. The artifact was moved to the Ara Pacis Museum and will be transferred to the Mausoleum of Augustus by 2024. Superintendents Claudio Parisi Presicce and Daniela Porro highlighted its political significance, linking Claudius's expansion of the pomerium to his granting of Senate access to Gauls. In Milan, excavations at Via Rovello 14 for a residential complex by Crea (Consolandi real estate assets) uncovered foundations of an ancient Roman public building, likely a pagan temple from the 1st-2nd century AD. Archaeologist Annamaria Fedeli noted its public function and potential uniqueness. Unlike Rome, construction continues around the site, which will be museumified for public access using private funds.
