Immersive show 'Sangue e Arena' brings gladiator battles back to the Colosseum arena
The Colosseum in Rome has launched 'Sangue e Arena', a multimedia immersive show that recreates ancient gladiator combats and spectacles directly in the arena where they originally took place. The project, costing 500,000 euros and completed in four months, was commissioned by the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo in collaboration with Electa as part of a broader cultural enhancement plan that includes rebuilding the arena floor for future events. The show uses a large projection screen, lights, sounds, and visual effects to immerse small, limited audiences in the history of the amphitheater. It draws on historical and iconographic sources, including the epigrams of poet Marcus Valerius Martialis, who described the inaugural games of 80 AD under Emperor Titus. The multimedia installations were created by the Canadian company Graphics eMotion, working with the monument's direction, the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, and a scientific committee of historians, archaeologists, and architects. The show runs until October 27 at the Colosseum, Piazza del Colosseo, 1, Rome.
