Immersive Art Explores New York Through LED Screens and Projections

In New York, immersive art leverages LED screens and video projectors, with Times Square's Midnight Moment featuring artist interventions. Ólafur Elíasson presented Lifeworld in 2024, blurring and slowing advertising sequences to create a three-minute abstract experience nightly from 11:57 PM to midnight. Yoshi Sodeoka followed in early 2025 with Infinite Ascent, depicting birds ascending against silhouetted cityscapes. The MoMA installed a large LED screen to display Rafaël Rozendaal's animations, originally coded for online viewing, allowing viewers to enter the geometric abstract images in real time. Artechouse in Chelsea hosts Submerge, a project with about fifteen immersive works, including Exo Cortex by Jérémy Oury, where geometric projections adapt to the space, and Be Water by Obvious, using AI to generate video sequences based on movement detection.
