IMMA's 'Take a Breath' Exhibition Explores Politics and Spirituality of Breathing

The Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) presents 'Take a Breath,' a major exhibition examining breathing through historical, social, political, and personal lenses. Featuring over 20 artists including Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Marina Abramović, Ana Mendieta, JMW Turner, and Isabel Nolan, the show explores themes of decolonisation, environmental racism, indigenous language, war's environmental impact, and breath as meditation. Key works include Ana Mendieta's 'Burial Pyramid' (1974), Khadija Saye's 'In this space we breathe' (2017-2018), and Belinda Kazeem-Kamiński's 'Respire' (2023). The exhibition addresses the Covid-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement, with Forensic Architecture's 'Tear Gas Tuesday' (2020) documenting tear gas use against protesters. A meditative space in the East Wing features works by Patrick Scott, William McKeown, and Waqas Khan. Performances by Maria Hassabi, Okwui Okpokwasili with Peter Born, and Camille Norment Trio with Crash Ensemble are scheduled. The exhibition runs at IMMA in Dublin.
