IMMA Opens Major Exhibition on Self-Determination and Nation-Building
The Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) will unveil 'Self-Determination: A Global Perspective' on November 30, 2023. This significant exhibition marks the conclusion of a three-year initiative involving over 110 artists, emphasizing the emergence of new nation-states after World War I and the influence of art on national identity. It is part of Ireland's Decade of Centenaries Programme 2012–2023. The showcase includes both historical and contemporary pieces, featuring more than 20 loans from Ukraine's National Art Museum and new works by artists such as Array Collective and Jasmina Cibic. Curated by Seán Kissane and initiated by IMMA Director Annie Fletcher, it explores cultural strategies in countries like Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, and Egypt, drawing on Woodrow Wilson's 1919 Paris Peace Talks. A publication will accompany the exhibition, which has received support from Minister Catherine Martin TD.
