cultural-heritage · 2026-04-19

Budapest's General Assembly selected a winning proposal for a public memorial addressing sexual violence against women during wartime in March 2022. Slovakian-Hungarian artist Ilona Németh collaborated with architect Gabi Mészáros and poet Anikó N. Tóth on the project titled Memory of Rape in Wartimes. The memorial is scheduled for realization in 2023. Hedvig Turai conducted an interview with Németh about the project, which was published on ARTMargins Online. The memorial aims to confront a difficult history that neither victims nor perpetrators typically want acknowledged. This juried competition resulted in a unique public art initiative focused on wartime sexual violence.
