illy Art Collection shifts from global stars to Italian artist Matteo Attruia

other · 2026-05-04

Since 1992, illycaffè has engaged more than a hundred contemporary artists from around the globe to create its renowned espresso cups, resulting in the illy Art Collection. Noteworthy contributors have included Yoko Ono, Robert Rauschenberg, Louise Bourgeois, and Anish Kapoor. Among the distinguished series are Kounellis's 2005 tribute to Greek tragedy, Kapoor's 2011 optical illusion designs, and Ono's 2015 Kintsugi-repaired cups commemorating significant dates. The 25th anniversary in 2017 was highlighted by a Robert Wilson installation in Venice. The latest project, however, signifies a shift: Matteo Attruia (born 1973, Sacile) has designed 36 cups and saucers featuring interchangeable words, focusing on social engagement rather than individual artistry. CEO Massimiliano Pogliani emphasized this collaboration's reflection on coffee's communal nature.
