Illegio exhibition reconstructs lost masterpieces by Van Gogh, Vermeer, Klimt
The exhibition 'Nulla è perduto' (Nothing Is Lost) in Illegio, Udine, from July 4 to December 13, 2020, showcases seven lost masterpieces reconstructed by Factum Arte using historical photos and 3D technology. The show, produced with Sky Arte and Ballandi Arts, features works destroyed or stolen, including Jan Vermeer's 'Concert' (stolen from Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990), Vincent van Gogh's 'Vase with Five Sunflowers' (destroyed in a 1945 US air raid in Japan), Gustav Klimt's 'Medicine' (burned by SS at Immendorf Castle in 1945), Franz Marc's 'Tower of Blue Horses' (seized by Hermann Goering, missing since 1945), Claude Monet's 'Water Lilies' (destroyed in a 1958 MoMA fire), Tamara de Lempicka's 'Myrto' (stolen by a Nazi officer in Paris in 1943), and Graham Sutherland's portrait of Winston Churchill (destroyed by Lady Churchill). Additionally, Caravaggio's 'St Matthew and the Angel' (destroyed in WWII) was recreated by artist Antero Kahila, and the Chartres Cathedral stained glass was rematerialized by Sandro Tomanin. Two original wooden sculptures by Domenico da Tolmezzo, stolen in 1968 and recovered in Bonn in 2018, are also displayed.
