Ilia Zdanevich Retrospective at Fondazione Dalle Nogare in Bolzano
Fondazione Antonio Dalle Nogare in Bolzano presents 'TOUTITÉ – ILIAZD. Lo studio della forma', the largest Italian retrospective dedicated to Ilia Zdanevich (1894–1975), also known as Iliazd. Curated by Eva Brioschi and Julia Marchand, the exhibition runs until June 27, 2026. Zdanevich was a poet, writer, playwright, critic, theorist, typographer, publisher, designer, and performer. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, to a French-Polish father and a Georgian pianist trained by Tchaikovsky, he moved to Saint Petersburg to study law but abandoned it for art and writing. With his brother Kirill and artists like Natalia Goncharova and Mikhail Larionov, he participated in Russian Futurism and zaum poetry. In 1921, he left Russia, stayed in Constantinople, and settled in Paris, where he collaborated with Sonia Delaunay, Coco Chanel, and Pablo Picasso, becoming a master of the artist's book (maître du livre d'artiste). The exhibition focuses on this practice, showcasing works like the Boîte-en-valise commission for Marcel Duchamp (1954–1958), LidantYU fAram (1923), Un Soupçon (1965), Le Frère Mendiant (1959) illustrated by Picasso, and Poésie de mots inconnus (1949) with contributions by Giacometti, Matisse, and Braque. The title 'TOUTITÉ' derives from the Russian vsechestvo and French toutisme (everythingism), describing a boundless creative attitude encompassing architecture, poetry, typography, fashion, design, and linguistic experimentation.
