Ilaria Gianni curates ARCOmadrid's Opening section with Stefanie Hessler
Ilaria Gianni, an independent curator from Rome, has been appointed co-curator of the Opening section at ARCOmadrid 2018 alongside German curator Stefanie Hessler. Opening is the fair's dedicated space for galleries under seven years old, featuring 19 galleries from 13 countries presenting emerging artists. Gianni and Hessler were paired by ARCO's artistic direction, which selects a biennial curatorial duo each year; Hessler previously curated the section with Juan Canela. The curators focused on performance and transformation, challenging galleries to present works that evolve over time and context, despite the difficulty of selling performance art at a fair. Italian participation includes Car Drde from Bologna (debuting in Spain with David Casini and Alexis Teplin), Copperfield Gallery (London) showing Rä di Martino, and Madragoa (Lisbon) presenting Renato Leotta. Gianni hopes to increase Italian representation in future editions.
