Il museo effimero della moda at Palazzo Pitti

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The exhibition 'Il museo effimero della moda. Appunti per un museo ideale' opens at the Galleria del Costume in Palazzo Pitti, Florence, running until October 22. Curated by Olivier Saillard, it presents around 200 garments and accessories spanning from the mid-19th century to the present, displayed on wooden mannequins, chairs, and other decorative objects from the palace. The show is part of a three-year program between the Uffizi Galleries, directed by Eike Schmidt, and the Centro di Firenze per la Moda Italiana, chaired by Andrea Cavicchi. Produced by Fondazione Pitti Immagine Discovery with Agenzia ICE and MIDE, the exhibition contrasts with Saillard's previous 'Karl Lagerfeld – Visions of Fashion' by embracing a provisional, suspended atmosphere. Notably, a fragile ivory dress by Madeleine Vionnet is shown for the last time before being permanently archived due to its irreparable condition. Saillard, director of the Palais Galliera in Paris, compares the collections of both museums to construct a free history of appearance.
