Ikea's Kompishäng Collection: Portable Furniture for Generation Rent

Ikea has introduced a new range of furniture and accessories named 'Kompishäng', tailored to meet the needs of renters, those frequently relocating, and students. This collection emerged after Ikea engaged with young adults in central London, gaining insights into their struggles with limited storage and the use of old moving boxes as furniture. Comprising 12 items, it features a folding desk/table, stackable stools that transform into shelving, a bookshelf-bookend hybrid, a portable hanging wardrobe organiser, back-of-door storage, a collapsible jute plant pot, and a wheeled bag. Prices start at £10 for the wheeled shopping bag and go up to £70 for the folding desk/table. Crafted from sturdy materials like solid pine, powder-coated steel, and canvas, designer David Wahl emphasized that the collection is meant to support life’s transitions, suitable for various living situations. Wiebke Braasch, another Ikea designer, highlighted the goal of creating easily movable furniture, while product developer Dora Ding expressed the desire for the collection to feel permanent despite frequent relocations. The collection is currently available for purchase.
