IKEA's Art and Social Engagement: From Foodspotting Parody to Street Art Murals

other · 2026-05-05

IKEA's approach to communication fuses art with social themes and viral marketing. In 2016, they aired a commercial that humorously critiqued foodspotting, showcasing an 18th-century noble family awaiting a court painter to complete a still life, accompanied by the tagline "Let's Relax." Previous initiatives included a 2011 billboard promoting inclusivity for the Catania store ("Siamo aperti a tutte le famiglie") and a 2012 video with a gay couple. In 2014, IKEA Singapore spoofed Apple with a "bookbook" catalog video and recreated a scene from The Shining in-store. Photographer Tim Cole transformed classic artworks for a 2014 campaign. That same year, IKEA introduced Art Photography, offering posters by 11 artists for €10. The IKEA Loves Earth project saw 21 street artists create murals in 19 Italian cities using eco-friendly paint. Additionally, the IKEA Foundation aids refugee housing, renewable energy, children's rights, women's conditions, and sustainable cotton farming in collaboration with WWF across various countries.
