Ikea launches AR app to virtually try furniture before buying

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

Ikea has launched Ikea Place, a new augmented reality app that lets customers virtually try furniture in their own homes before purchasing. The app uses Apple's ARKit technology to scale products with 98% accuracy, showing fabric textures and lighting effects. Users can save and share their virtual room setups as images or videos, and buy items directly from the Ikea website. Michael Valdsgaard, Digital Transformation Leader at Inter Ikea Systems, said the app makes it easier to decide what to buy by allowing customers to test many products, styles, and colors in real environments simply by touching their device screen.
