iGuzzini installs IoT lighting system in Scrovegni Chapel for Giotto frescoes

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

iGuzzini has completed a new IoT-based lighting system for the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, home to Giotto's celebrated frescoes. The system, developed in collaboration with the Photometry Section of the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro, replaces the 2002 installation and uses responsive LED technology with sensors and software to collect visitor flow data, adapting artificial light to natural conditions for optimal color rendering and conservation. The upgrade achieves 60% energy savings. Padua mayor Sergio Giordani called it an ambitious intervention benefiting the community and a city milestone. iGuzzini president Adolfo Guzzini stated that advanced lighting will allow visitors to appreciate Giotto's masterpieces better than in the 14th century. The project is part of a broader Padua enhancement program also involving the Specola astronomical observatory (250th anniversary) and Palazzo della Ragione. Other recent lighting projects include Osram's work on Raphael's Rooms in the Vatican and Viabizzuno's illumination of Michelangelo's Tomb of Julius II in Rome.
