Igshaan Adams Turns Guggenheim Bilbao into Archive of Movement
From 5 May to 1 November 2026, the Guggenheim Bilbao will host 'Unsettling Dust: The Body’s Archive,' an exhibition by South African artist Igshaan Adams. This immersive showcase, part of the museum's in situ series, intertwines elements of weaving, choreography, sculpture, and social history. Adams reimagines the gallery as a dynamic archive, utilizing thread, beads, and suspended structures that embody personal experiences. Growing up in Bonteheuwel, a community affected by apartheid, he examines the ways in which race, religion, sexuality, and displacement leave marks on both the body and the environment. Featured works include large woven tapestries inspired by collaborative dance performances involving South African and Greek dancers in Athens, capturing touch and rhythm, and suggesting that weaving serves as a collective healing process.
