Igor Mitoraj's Monumental Sculptures Installed Across Syracuse's Neapolis and Mount Etna

exhibition · 2026-04-26

Thirty monumental sculptures by Igor Mitoraj (1944–2014) are on view at the Neapolis archaeological site in Syracuse until October 31, 2025, in a show titled 'Lo Sguardo – Humanitas – Physis.' Two additional works are placed at Ortigia (Syracuse) and in the Etna Park (Catania). The exhibition reinterprets classical aesthetics with Hellenistic-style pieces such as 'Icaro' and 'Tindaro,' exploring human fragility. At Neapolis, sculptures interact with landmarks like the Ear of Dionysius, the Cordari Cave, and the Roman Amphitheater. In Ortigia, a work stands by the sea near Castello Maniace. 'Teseo screpolato' is installed at 2,000 meters on the southeast slope of Etna, near the Filiciusa gate in Serra La Nave, Ragalna. This marks Mitoraj's fourth Sicilian exhibition, following shows in Agrigento's Valley of the Temples (2011), Noto (2020), and Villa Romana del Casale (2021). The exhibition is promoted by the Parco archeologico di Siracusa Eloro Villa del Tellaro e Akrai, produced by Atelier Mitoraj in collaboration with Mediatica and Tate, and supported by the Sicilian Region, the Etna Park, and the municipalities of Ragalna and Syracuse.
