Igor Grubić's 366 Liberation Rituals at Galerija Miroslav Kraljević

Croatian artist Igor Grubić presented his exhibition '366 Liberation Rituals' at Galerija Miroslav Kraljević in Zagreb from March 20 to April 21, 2009. The show featured photo-documents, artist statements, and short videos documenting twenty-five of his performances and public interventions. Grubić's work, which began in 2008, explores revolutionary movements of 1968 through personal dedications and provocative actions in public spaces. He left his job as head of documentary production studio Fade In to pursue these artistic rituals. Performances included shaving his scalp into a star shape as homage to Marcel Duchamp and Tomislav Gotovac, acting as a beggar near Dubrovnik's city walls, and spraying constructivist-inspired graffiti. During the exhibition's final week, extended due to high attendance, Grubić adorned Zagreb University's Arts and Humanities Faculty building with a red net covering a monument to poet S.S. Kranjcevic, connecting it to student protests. The exhibition served as an introduction to an artist book scheduled for publication by the gallery in June 2009. Grubić connects his practice to 1970s conceptual art and the Group of Six Artists, distinguishing himself through an absence of sarcasm and dark humor.
